Walking down the DistrictThe main line of Khamovniki District was conditioned by ancient Smolensk way directed to Vladimir city. Ostozhenka Street and it’s extension Chudovka street have been risen along this road. In XVIIth century weavers settled along side Chudovka street. They were producing flax textile. At the times of ancient Russia flax was called as “kham”(this word presumably comes from Indian “khaman”- white cotton goods) - from this it comes name Khamovniki. Then it was organized two streets parallel to Zemlyanoy val and czar’s khamovny settle has given rise to suburb of weavers. In 1718 Linen textile mill of Moscow was established close to Khamovny suburb. This mill was later turned into sole proprietorship of russified Englishman John Thomas. His country estate was located opposite to the mill. At the beginning of XIXth century at the place of Thomas’ mill an ensemble of Khamovniky casernes has been built. In 1810-1820es parade-ground was laid out in front of it. Thomas’ house was reconstructed to be building for supreme officers and called as “Chief house”(Komsomol'skiy prospekt, 13). Till the end of XIXth century there was no large real estate development at this district. Country gardens were situated next to city center. At the end of XVIIth century aristocracy has shown their interest to green picturesque area and started to build country-estates with regular parks, pounds, constructions. Such notable families as Dolgorukiy, Volkonskiy, Golitsiny, Trubetskoy, Obolensky, Kropotkiny had lived there… One of those houses was owned by Denis Davydov – hero of Patriotic war 1812. Country estate buildings are survived till the present times and now considered as beauty of Ulitsa Prechistenka. Only after revolution at the end of 20-es present-day areas of Frunzenskaya naberezhnaya and Komsomol'skiy prospect started to be built up. At first it were formed several blocks of 4-5storey houses for workers at Kooperativnaya st., Dovatora st., Usacheva st. and near Silk-mill of Moscow named by Sverdlov Ya.M. Then intensive build up of the whole district has been started and level of efforts was really enormous. Frunzenskaya naberezhnaya was revetted with granite, wharfs for water buses were organized as well. Solemn Stalin’s houses were built along the Moscow-river line. At the same place they organized to be pompous building of Ministry of Defense. At 1958 huge highway has been finished and it made center and southwest districts to be connected. So we can see that Khamovniki District has a kind of time differences. If you wish to make journey to the past - just compare ancient blocks of Prechistenskaya naberezhnaya and Ostozhenka with its’ architecture styles reserved from many centuries to multi-storey typical buildings of Komsomol'skiy prospect or to monolith of Sadovoye Kol'tso (Garden Ring). High emotional richness of historical air helps you to make journey to the past times. When you come to Khamovniki District you are on a visit to Alexander Pushkin, Lyev Tolstoy, Alexander Herzen, Valentin Serov, Mikhail Vrubel, Ivan Turgenev, Roerichs, Mikhail Bulgakov and many others. |
