L.N. Tolstoy Museum-estate in KhamovnikiMuseum-state of Leo Tolstoy in Khamovniki is a memorial complex and preserves realities of the times of Tolstoy’s life there. According to instructions of Leo Tolstoy the main building was completed. Memorial things were preserved as well as furniture etc. There is also reserved areas of 0,96 hectares. In July 1882 country estate was purchased by Leo Tolstoy for 27 000 rubles; former owner was living there for 10 years. Tolstoy considerably enlarged the house by 3 additional rooms at the second floor and by front gala-ladder. Construction was leaded by architect Nikiforov. This country estate at Dolgo-Khamovnichesky pereulok (today it is called Lev Tolstoy street) was a home for writer and his family during nineteen winters since 1882 till 1901. Many events took place in those country estate. In 1884 the last daughter Alexandra was born, in 1886 son Alexey died, in 1888 the last kid of Tolstoy family – Vanechka - was born, but his life was pretty short. House at Khamovniki is a place where Tolstoy wrote about one hundred novels including “The Death of Ivan Ilyich”, “The Kreutzer Sonata”, novel “Resurrection”, pieza “The Power of Darkness”, ”Harvest of education”, “Living corpse”. On 5th of April 1901 Tolstoy had finished the last book in those house – “An answer to Most Holy Synod”. In May 1901 Tolstoy went to Yasnaya Polyana to spend summer time as he always did. In autumn he’s got sick and went to the Crimea for medical treatment till middle of the summer 1902. Then he returned to Yasnaya Polyana and never left it. House at Khamovniki was occupied by elder son of writer – Sergey Tolstoy. House was a very important literature and social center because Tolstoy was very interested in social issues and always used to invite outstanding writers, painters, composers, a lot of readers. At the present time the set-up of Tolstoy’s house in Khamovniki has been reconstructed based on 4200 original family belongings as it was at the middle of 1890es.
