The Pushkin State Museum of Fine ArtsThe Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts was founded on 17(29) of August 1898. Just on that day at the place of former Kolymazhny dvor not far from Cathedral of Christ the Saviour new museum of Moscow named after Emperor Alexander III has been started to be built. The founder, initiator of the Museum and its first Director was university professor Ivan Tsvetaev, father of great Russian poetess Marina Tsvetaeva. Russian scientists and artists together with famous people of Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Greece took part in construction of museum what was possible thanks to authority and energy of Ivan Tsvetaev. New museum was planned first of all as university training center. With that end in view organizers have purchased gypsum moulds of antique sculptures, specially made by biggest museums of Europe, as well as vast collection of Egyptian art (about 6000 items) owned by V. Golenishev, orientalist of St Petersburg. A lot of famous persons of painting art participated at different stages of museum construction such as Viktor Vasnetsov Vasily Polenov Igor Grabar, Konstantin Korovin, architect Fyodor Schechtel and many others. After14 years from first-brick laying in may 1912 Museum was opened with a sound of solemn cantata devoted to those event. And only in 1932 it was renamed to the Museum of Fine Arts, in 1937 it was named by Alexander Pushkin. Content of picture gallery was finally formed in 1948. Gallery received collection of Sergei Tretyakov, Felix Yusupov, Shuvalov, Genrikh Brokar and others. Collection of museum was enriched by Igor Morozov, Dmitry Schukin. Gallery has received pictures of Netherlands and German masters, Flemish and Spanish painters of XVIIth century, Italian painters of XIII-XVIIth centuries, French authors of XIXth century: pictures of Édouard Manet, Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Edgar Degas, Camille Pissarro, Alfred Sisley, Paul Cézanne, Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, Henri Matisse, Marke, Georges Rouault, Pablo Picasso and others. Big importance for picture gallery organization had items from the State Hermitage: pictures of the most famous European painters - Sandro Botticelli, Rembrandt, Anthony van Dyck, Peter Paul Rubens, Nicolas Poussin, Murillo, Canaletto. Today the design of exposition halls demonstrates different stages of world culture history. Imagination of visitor is usually amazed by military statues of Italian yard (which are in fact copies of Florentine Palace yard Bargello), as well as architectural and sculptural ensembles of Greek yard, gala-hall of Graeco-Roman basilica. Comparing to 9 thousands exhibits at the moment of museum opening – now it’s collection increased more than 60 times. Today The Pushkin State Museum occupies four buildings: main building under the project of Moscow architect Roman Klein, building of Museum of private collections and Gallery of European and American Art of XIX-ХХ centuries and Children center “Museuon”. Only four world giants – British Museum, Louvre, the Hermitage of St-Petersburg and “Metropolitan” of New-York – have bigger collection of foreign arts from ancient times till the XXth century. |
