State Museum of Alexander Pushkin

Crossing the road from State Museum of Leo Tolstoy you can find State Museum of Alexander Pushkin located at Prechistenka in former country estate of Khrushchev-Seleznev.

Building of museum is classical architecture memorial to Russian Empire style built in 1814-1817 under the project of Afanasy Grigoriev together with sculptor Ivan Vitaly. country estate occupies almost half of the block, front house is joined by household building groups (1797) along the Khrushchevskiy pereulok.

Along the Prechistenka street house is joined by garden with a small elegant pavilion. Internal planning of the front house and some details of internal decoration are preserved in original. At the building fronton you can see the coat of arms from it’s last owners – Seleznevy family.

Museum of Alexander Pushkin initially originated as a part of State Literature Museum. Later it became independent and opened first exposition on 6th of June 1961.

Starting from the first days of it’s existing a lot of gifts were received. Gifts are related to Pushkin – portraits, books, manuscripts, engravings, china, furniture. Even private collections were received by Museum: library of Russian poetry collected by Ivan Rozanov, goods of applied art and books collection from Pavel Gubar, engraving collection from Yakov Zak.

Special role in Museum’s history was played by preparation and carrying out of 200-years anniversary of Pushkin’s birthday. The main wooden house of country estate and auxiliary outhouse of XVIIIth century received capital restoration repair; underground part of museum has been built. Yard of country estate was covered by glass ceiling what have helped to consolidate separate buildings.

Stocks depository is considered to be the heart of Museum. It was rebuilt at empty areas of Gagarinsky and Khrushchevskiy pereulok. Unique collection of more than 200 thousands items of painting, decoration-applying art, manuscripts related to life and work of Pushkin and his epoch are located there.

Walking from one hall to another you are immersed into the Pushkin’s times with realities of three emperors rule including writing tool of Alexander the Ist and decanter of general Mikhail Orlov. And, of course, personal history of Russian genius – childhood, youth, maturity, last years of life: ball and particularistic suits, furniture, candlesticks, portraits and sculptures of ancestry, relatives, friends and enemies as well as manuscripts of Alexander Pushkin himself.

Stocks of Museum have something about 50 thousands volumes of poet’s publications, scientific and fiction literature about him, pictures of cities and placed which he had visited, including Moscow. All publications issued at the times of Pushkin being alive are presented in originals only. Personal stuff of poet is presented as well: writing desk, goose feather, furniture and stuff of his friends – Ivan Pushchin, Pyotr Vyazemsky, sisters Ushakovy, intravial portraits of Alexandr Puchkin by Egor Geytman, Nikolay Utkin, Pyotr Sokolov.

Museum has a branch – museum-apartment of Alexander Pushkin at Old Arbat (Arbat st., 53).
