Novodevichy ConventNovodevichy Convent was founded in 1524 by Grand Prince Vasili III (father of Ivan the Terrible) in commemoration of the conquest of Smolensk in 1514. Prior to long campaign grand prince vowed in case of success “… to found maidens’ Convent in Moscow and temples named by “Immaculacy” and “Origin of Precious cross” and other temples”. In 1524 he kept his promise by granting of 3 thousand rubles in silver coin for construction. Originally it was known as also known as Bogoroditse-Smolensky Convent. Wonderful chronicles you can see on stones, sculptures, church painting, decoration and church plates, weapons and dresses. Cathedral of Smolensk Mother of God Icon was founded in 1524-1525 similar to Dormition Cathedral in Kremlin. It has three galleries and joined northern and southern porches. If you come in your breath will be taken away by frescos and iconostasis going up along the wall to dome and watching by angels’ faces with golden wings. Frescos on the walls have it’s own subject – integration of Russian lands is activity of warriors and princes posed as saints. One of side-altars has an icon “Day of Judgment”. Your attention will be stolen by two elegant barbican churches – Preobrazhenskaya from the north and Pokrovskaya from the south – founded in 1680es and well-proportioned six-tiers bell tower which you can see from far away.
