Novodevichy CemeteryNovodevichy Cemetery sprung up in XVIth century at the site of Novodevichy Convent. During three centuries mainly representatives of church and secular nobility were buried there. In XIXth century clerical and feudal elittness of Cemetery was interrupted. Graves with civil names appeared there: writers, musicians, scientists. Yard of museum has no about 100 tombstones. Cemetery is frequently visited for excursions – to see graves of famous national persons, military leaders, writers and poets, painters, actors, scientists. Tombstones are also a kind of sculptural museum – it’s made by outstanding sculptors such as Nikolay Andreev, Ivan Shadr, Sergey Konenkov, Seraphim Merkulov, Nikolai Tomsky, Vera Mukhina, Yevgeny Vuchetich, Lev Kerbel and others. At Novodevichy Cemetery you can find memorials and tombstone of famous people such as hero of 1812 Denis Davydov, Mikhail Zagoskin, Ivan Lazhechnikov, Aleksey Pisemsky, Decembrists Matvey Muraviev-Apostol, Sergei Troubetzkoy and others. |
